Hunter x Hunter 21 – Going Hunting

For some reason I really enjoy this character. Pretty sure it’s because he’s a green blob wearing a kickin’ suit. I guess when you look like that, you’d better be the best dressed person in the room!

Don’t have too much to say about this episode because it’s mostly transitional — everyone’s recovering after all the craziness that ended the Hunter Exam, and they’re moving on to bigger and better things. For all you folks who like Hanzo and those other people, I’m sorry to say that you won’t be seeing them again for a long time! (At least, I heard Hanzo shows up again later in the series. Not sure about the other Hunters who aren’t the main crew and Hisoka.) I was sad when Hanzo rode the bus out of the story in the original series. He was my favorite new Hunter outside of the main folks. How could you not like a ninja who has his own business cards? Awesome.

I ❤ Hanzo.

The main plot point of the episode is that Killua’s older brother is still a doucheprick. What a surprise. The way he backs off from Hisoka has me wondering, though . . . do we ever see Illumi really fight during the series? His bit during the island part of the trial is pretty short, and he intimidates Killua into quitting rather than actually fighting. I don’t doubt his strength, or anything; I just think it’s weird that there’s this relatively major character who is built up as one of the stronger members of an assassin clan, and I never really saw him fight where the original anime adaptation concluded.

I suppose, though, that Illumi is more important to the story as a symbol of what Killua has to overcome. He’s such a major figure in Killua’s life, and what he represents is more of a mental than a physical challenge for Killua. In that sense, it isn’t important at all to see Illumi beat the hell out of whoever. It might look awesome, but it’s not totally necessary to the story. Plus, you gotta have something to pull out of your hat if you run out of ideas! “Hm, you know who hasn’t been in an awesome fight yet? Illumi. That’ll fill some chapters!”

Other random thoughts from this episode . . .

  • I enjoy that Gon, Kurapika and Leorio use the Internet to find out where Kukuroo Mountain is. I believe this part of the story came out in late 1998 or early 1999, which is when the dot com boom was still going strong, though it wouldn’t be too much longer before the bubble burst. Point is, it’s just fun to see the Internet acknowledged in a manga/anime when it was really growing. Makes me wonder what was the first manga/anime to involve the Internet as the Internet, and not an Internet-like system.
  • This is the part of the episode where Hunter x Hunter kindly reminds you that Hisoka is a god damned creep.
  • Is it just me, or did this episode make Menchi’s shorts shorter than usual? At the very least, I don’t remember seeing any butt crack before. Just an inch lower and we’d see her naughty tattoo! I probably shouldn’t be questioning this, though, because lol anime.

  1. I can tell you right now there’s a good reason you don’t want to fight Illumi.

If you follow the manga in the later chapter you can see the sort of things he can do with those pins. Such terrible things. O-O I don’t mean what he did to those mafia dons.
